Adidas sparked a conversation about body positivity in Feb 2022 when they photographed 25 pairs of diverse breasts, sharing the uncensored collage on social media. Their caption emphasized the need for inclusivity as it relates to support for all breast shapes and sizes. While some praised this move as a step toward body positivity, others questioned its authenticity and all round effectiveness.
The image and caption, focusing solely on breasts, raised concerns about objectification. Do the breasts not come with heads? Do they not belong to actual women? Objectification aside, this debate highlights a broader issue: the challenge of true inclusivity. Adidas faced scrutiny due to the apparent lack of representation of curvier bodies among the breasts showcased. Why are buxom bodies being excluded from the definition of ‘all body types’?
Additionally, reports suggested that Adidas’ wide range of sports bras was not as inclusive in plus sizing and styles as claimed. If a brand asserts it caters to all women but falls short in embracing all body types, it naturally leaves us wondering about the authenticity of their body positivity and liberation message.
This situation reflects a common challenge faced by brands claiming to be universal solutions. While many aspire to cater to everyone, the reality is that no brand can genuinely and accurately meet the needs of every body type. The diverse nature across the sizing gamut is just too vast. Inclusivity for the entire industry cannot, reasonably, be achieved by one entity. Inclusivity is a team sport, as it were.
At Gird Power, we recognize the multifaceted nature of this challenge. We understand that accurate representation is vital, and we acknowledge that this representation is not uniform. Our products and social media initiatives are specifically tailored to women who wear plus size clothing, addressing the unique struggles they face. However, we also acknowledge the diversity within the plus size community itself. We are steadfastly committed to easing these challenges, embracing as many plus size body types as possible. Our dedication stands not just to our brand, but more importantly, to you – the buxom woman. We invite you to join us in embracing body positivity, one step at a time. #BodyPositivity #Inclusivity #GirdPowerJourney
